Staff Professional Development

Providing career development support to young people and their parent/guardian can be challenging. By having staff well versed in career development practice, students and parent/guardian will receive quality career support.

Options Talking Careers are happy to talk with you regarding staff PD opportunities. We tailor our PD presentations to meet your unique PD requirements and always talk with you to ensure we are clear about your needs. We offer the following PD opportunities for staff:

  • The ‘ins and outs’ of career decision making
  • Managing the challenges faced when talking with young people about career decision making
  • The new ATAR structure … how it will influence your conversations with young people
  • Understanding and managing the QTAC application process

Parent/Guardian workshops and presentations

Parent/guardian play an integral part in their child’s career decision making process. Too often they have career conversations with their children founded on out of date information fuelled by anxiety and uncertainty.

Options Talking Careers can deliver tailored parent/guardian workshops and/or presentations that support parent/guardian to gain a better understanding of current career development practices. Presentations that we currently run for parent/guardian are:

  • Understanding Gen Millennials … How do they tick?
  • The new system … so different to when I was at school!
  • Talking with my child about their career journey
  • Managing the anxiety in our home

Student presentations

Students have little or no experience in ‘serious’ decision making and when confronted with career decisions often feel very stressed and can sometimes make poor decisions.

Options Talking Careers can deliver student focused presentations to small groups or to year level assemblies. Presentation topics include:

  • How to choose senior subjects
  • Pathways options after school
  • Scholarships for tertiary education
  • A gap year – the pros and cons
  • QTAC applications – getting it right
  • Putting together your Resume

Year 10 pathways planning templates, student and staff workshops

The career pathway planning or Senior Education and Training Plan (in QLD) document and meeting is a valuable tool in the career development support staff’s tool kit. A well-constructed plan and meeting can put young people and their parent/guardian at ease with the senior subject selection process along with a better understanding about career decision making.

In Queensland the 2018, Year 10 cohort being will be the first year to undertake their senior studies in the new ATAR system it is important that the SET P process is relevant, current and user friendly for both students and their parent/guardian.

Options Talking Careers has developed a career pathway plan/SETP that is grounded in current career development theory while addressing the specifications of tertiary entry requirements. Our Career pathway plan/SET P plan will walk students through the process of identifying:

  • Personal aspirations now and in their future
  • Their current skills, interests and informal knowledge base
  • Their academic, personal and life management ability
  • Appropriate and achievable career and training pathways during senior school and beyond
  • A suitable senior pathway and associated subjects for their senior phase of learning

Options Talking Careers can deliver an online career pathway plan/SET P template that will allow the student, staff member and family member to work through these issues and nominate their chosen senior subjects that can be easily downloaded into the school timetabling program.

We are also happy to work with you to develop opportunities:

  • Staff professional development to better equip them with skills to positively manage their career pathway plan/SET P meetings resulting with a positive experience for all involved
  • Parent/guardian workshop and/or presentation that provides an overview of the career pathway plan/SET P purpose and process which will see them more comfortably participate in the career pathway plan/SET P meeting
  • Students the opportunity to understand the senior subject process, pathways after school including tertiary entry and skills to make sound career decisions now and in their futures
  • School administrative and IT staff responsible for timetabling to ensure that the plan and data collected can be effectively and efficiently utilised in the timetabling process
